brianna price aka b.traits, launches her new record label venture, in.toto, with a self-produced two track single, still point/north shore. in.toto, to mean as a whole, altogether, unity, will focus not only on her own productions and releases, but also provide a platform for up and coming artists, and those producers already championed in her dj sets and hugely loved bbc radio 1 show, by way of new material and compilation albums. the label will be backed by bespoke events and club nights, enabling the artists and the sound of in.toto to reach far and wide. on the labels inaugural release, brianna sets the tone perfectly with still point. gnarly, rasping bass punctures the gentle piano riff and ethereal synth pads as this club ready track blossoms into life, the assured and driving drums never letting the energy drop for one second. on the flip side of the limited edition, purple 12inch vinyl release, north shore opens with warm idm pulses and tones, grandiose strings and vocal refrains create a huge sound that takes its unexpected breakbeat twist, reminiscent of british rave heroes orbital, whilst holding its own with its fresh and bright production.

newcomer region takes no time to get his credentials across, and this debut ep is all you could possibly ask for from an artist making their way up the food chain. coming though on the young jaunt label, region dishes out some seriously magnificent dub techno lashings here, with the opener -subline- being something of rough gem, the remix comes from lies-associate voiski, and the frenchman strips the whole thing down to a deeper, murkier tone that we ve come to associate him to. -borders-, on the b-side, is a supremely deep and meditative house track with a touch of the shed in it, and main man basic soul unit drops his version of the tune, a broken beat assemblage with that same dubwise feel that wraps the groove of the original cut.

two massive unreleased 12&#8243,,, inch disco bangers from the obscure florida band fruit, cut loud and deep like a true disco 12 should be. the fruit band’s fleeting existence was only recently revealed by the discovery of a few unsold copies of their sole 1978 7&#8243,,, single, say it, which quickly became a cult showpiece for savvy djs and collectors.

athens of the north had a few of these lying around after pressing the henry stone lp so as its a quiet month i thought we would share the remaining copies of this holy grail, be quick, not many and no repress. 200 copies.

stone cold classic, although pastime paradise has been reissued a couple of time on compilations every single reissue has used the rocky lp version which is not nearly as good as the original 7inch cut. as we at athens of the north like to do things right we went back to the sony tape vault and had the 7- version transferred for the first time since the o.g 45 was cut. this 45 sounds fantastic, much stronger then the o.g 45 cut so its a no brainer. on the flip we took one of our favourite track from the lp and introduced it to 7inch for the first time, mambotango is a dreamy sountracky latin disco number i used to spin on warm up duty, very new york.

i’ll be honest, i had forgotten about samuel jonathan johnson until i heard theo parrish play it recently. i used to spin the lp years ago but my copy got lost or beat. soon as i heard it i made a call and sorted out the 45, just an amazing solid groove on sweet love, you cant help but feel it. the flip reasons, is the other great track from the same columbia lp my music. first time on 45 for both of these, once they are gone that is it. disco essential!

our second and final release from billy bruner t spoon out of his obscure oil capital record label. if you dance tonight is almost unknown boogie spin your never gonna find, solid. on the flip say yea is an 80s sweet soul ballad years ahead of the pack, i have a soft spot for this one, damn good end of nighter if its been a good one. strictly 500 no repress.

two gold standard musical compositions i wont insult by labelling with a genre. *truth is the key* is one of my favourite tracks period, the arp solo just does it for me in every way. the vocal will be familiar as irene datcher also sang on the james mason lp (who also features on these tracks). *dreamflower* should need no introduction, famously sampled by erykah badus *didnt cha know* and many others. this is a sublime landscape is notable for ryo kawasakis dreamy guitar work, stone cold classic. both sides surprisingly have never graced the 7 inch format until now, absolutely essential 45.

first time i heard this track out was d.jing with adrian gibson, booker/manager for the london jazz cafe in its hay day in the early 2000s, i thought it was some crazy obscusre early jacksons 45. i had no idea what it was but i liked it and it stuck with me. as my eyes were on 45 s at the time it passed me by until numero group reissued it on their fabulous soul messengers compilation (essential purchase if you don t own). after quite a bit of badgering rob sevier, co-owner of numero group, let this grace my format of choice, so here we are, both sides first outing as a single.

the unreleased album from 1984 sees the day of light! the final album for keith hudson aka the dark prince of reggae was recorded at tuff gong studio and backed by the wailers! six extended masterpieces of rasta communications. a must have album for the keith hudson fanbase, for roots reggae & the wailers collectors in general, and all the dubheads outernationally!

alex north’s work for ballet, symphony orchestra, television and film continues to stand the test of time almost 25 years after his death. although nominated 15 times for an academy award, it wasn’t until 1986 that he was finally given due recognition when a lifetime achievement oscar was bestowed upon him. but, as this soundtrack lp so amply demonstrates, his pioneering work on streetcar remains one of alex north’s crowning achievements.

as björk continues to make waves in the electronic scene, we are now presented with exclusive remixes by boundary-pushing artists and djs selected by the icelandic artist. the vulnicura remix project will be released in very limited quantities for collectors only, as a series of single-sided etched translucent 12” records including download code, each with their own unique etching & die-­cut vulnicura wound sleeves, designed by m/m (paris).

northside ‘82 is proud to welcome smart bar resident savile to the label for our second release. entitled suffer play, this three track ep imagines an alternate reality where minimal house takes an extended detour through chicago, strapping on the city’s famous jacking percussion for a more robust but equally razor sharp sound. “spaced” opens the record with a jolt of jacking house, pairing a limber bass line with tense percussion and pinpoint vocal samples. “1pm morning” is inviting and warm, a richly crafted environment lit by by resonating bass, wallpapered with sharpened guitar strums, and decorated with jangling percussion and clavinet accents. closer, “recipes from nowhere”, is the dreamiest of them all, letting melodies bubble around the track’s bass line backbone and swaddling listeners in melancholic pads. altogether an exceptional record from one of the city’s brightest young.

north lake is a fairly established name in the leftfield techno scene and each release he puts out leaves his listeners constantly looking forward to much more. the prolific and elusive michigan-based artist has a rich repertoire of previous releases and contributions on exemplary record labels such as permanent vacation, life and death, ellum or phonica.
the four tracks on his seventh ep stand out as masterful, immersive, very intense and at times eerie pieces of lower-bpm dance music. opener *sun gun* and title-track *two headed beast* follow up on the trails of *journey to the center of the sun* or *marlborol noir*, adding further proof of his ability to constantly deliver memorable synth jams. the b-sides *caverns* and *white lodge* allow him to explore his darker side, adding even more melodic intricacy and dramatic moments to his deep, eerie trademark sound.
*two headed beast* is our collectives sixth physical release to date and the first in a longer string scheduled in 2015. *white lodge* will be available exclusively on wax.
